Population, area and gross area product

The Kansai region only occupies about 10% of the total area of Japan, but it boasts about 17% of the nation's population and accounts for about 16.4% of gross domestic product. Kansai plays a great role in driving the Japanese economy, second only to the Tokyo metropolitan region.

Kansai population prediction

The estimated future population of Kansai is expected to decrease by 880,000 people between 2005 and 2020. By age group, the decline in the population of 15-64year-olds is greatest, while the proportion of the total population of those 65 or older is expected to increase to 40%.
