Population, area and gross area product

The Kansai region only occupies about 7% of the total area of Japan, but it boasts about 17% of the nation's population and accounts for about 16.4% of gross domestic product. Kansai plays a great role in driving the Japanese economy, second only to the Tokyo metropolitan region.

Kansai population prediction

The estimated future population of Kansai is expected to decrease by 2,830,000 people between 2015 and 2035. Looking at the population in 2035 by age group, the decline is expected to be greatest amongst 15-64 year-olds, while the proportion of the total population of those 65 or older is expected to increase to 33.6%.
